Vans + Chris Johanson’s Seriously Sustainable New Capsule Was Made With As Little Waste As Possible

Chris Johanson put sustainability front and center when designing his new collection for Vans. Following the Oregon-based artist and musician’s edict Be Cool to Your Living World, the sneakers and apparel were produced with organic cottons, natural and recycled rubbers and as little waste as possible. Instead of ending up in the trash, material scraps from the factory floor were chopped up and inserted into the outsoles of the Vans X Chris Johanson Destruct SF and Authentic SF. Sneaker laces were made with fast growing, renewable jute fiber – grown with minimal water. And, each t-shirt in the collection – cut from cotton fabric made with recycled water bottles and postindustrial fibers – upcycles the equivalent of 5 plastic bottles.

Johanson’s distinctive swirl pattern makes an appearance on the Authentic SF, Trek Slip-On, and the Swirl Boardshort, crafted from recycled polyester. A snap-back baseball cap, fleece hoodie, and assortment of t-shirts all feature Johanson’s hand-drawn smiley face and reminder to Be Cool to Your Living World.
