Castañer + Paul Smith’s New Espadrille Capsule Will Have You Dreaming Of A Beach Vacay

When Paul Smith wanted to create espadrilles for his SS21 collection he turned to Catalan shoemaker Castañer, a heritage label with nearly a century of experience. The family run brand still uses the manual jute plaiting machine originally operated by co-founder Tomás Serra to hand braid jute soles. Brought together by a shared interest in traditional craftsmanship, Smith and Castañer designed two mens styles: the Pablo ($180), a classic cotton espadrille in Smith’s colorful signature stripe; and the Paul ($230), a loafer-style suede upper finished with colorful ‘PS stripe’ grosgrain trim. Both styles feature vulcanized rubber soles and natural jute footbeds with leather insole patches printed with doodles hand drawn by Sir Paul.
