V&A To Host Homage To Eighties Clubwear

This summer the Victoria and Albert Museum will host From Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the ’80s, a homage to eighties club fashion and culture. The exhibition, which opens in July, will examine how the flamboyant fashions worn by London club kids in the early 1980’s influenced emerging designers including John Galliano, Vivienne Westwook and Stephen Jones. The items in the exhibition will be display in groups based on the decade’s fashion trends: Goth, New Romantics, Fetish, Rave, and High Camp.

The highlight of the exhibition will be a collection of denim jackets commissioned by Blitz magazine in collaboration with Levi Strauss & Co (images above). Curator Claire Wilcox is currently working to reunite the customized denim jackets created by 22 British designers for a 1986 charity auction to benefit the Price’s Trust. Wilcox has located nine of the jacket but is still looking for the pieces created by Paul Smith, Jasper Conran, Jean Muir, Zandra Rhoes and several other designers.

From Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the ’80’s will be open from July 10th 2013 to February 16th 2014 at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Tickets will go on sale in June at www.vam.ac.uk.
