Watch Porn: Shinola’s Latest Monster Diver Surfaces

Shinola just released its strongest, most technically advanced dive watch to date. The Forged Carbon Monster features a 45-mm case crafted from a cutting-edge material that takes carbon fiber to the next level. To create the case, carbon fiber is chopped into small pieces, mixed with resin and molded. Under intense heat and pressure, it solidifies into a forged composite that is ultra-strong, corrosion-resistant, and ultralight – weighing as much as plastic.

Stylistically, the diver takes inspiration from Black Beach of Silver Bay on Minnesota’s North Shore. The beaches black sand is the result of illegal industrial dumping. Taconite – an iron-bearing sedimentary rock – dumped into Lake Superior washed ashore and mixed with the sand to create a matte black shoreline and rust stained rocks. These tones are echoed in the watches case, sandblasted black dial and orange woven nylon strap. Polished gunmetal indices with blue glow C1 lume fill and cream-tipped hands provide easy legibility in the dark. A diver down flag sits below the twelve o’clock marker, and a date window sits at three o’clock. Rated at 30 ATM, the case features a screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel and sandblasted PVD black stainless steel case back with an etching of the Great Lakes in silhouette. Each watch comes in tackle box style presentation case with an additional black rubber strap, metal name plate and a fold-out poster telling the story of Black Beach.
