Wales Bonner’s Jamaican Heritage Inspired Her Adidas Originals Collaboration

For her new adidas Originals collaboration, designer Wales Bonner explored the impact of Jamaican and Caribbean youth culture on 1970s London. Influenced by the music and literature of the era, Bonner blended adidas’ sporting heritage and performance fabrics with elements of classic tailoring and modern menswear. At the center of the collection is a trio of tracksuits with oversized ribbing and a crochet version of the 3-stripes trademark, inspired by traditional Jamaican crafts. Bonner used the crocheted 3-stripes logo again on new version of the popular Core Black/Cream White Samba sneaker. A second version of the Samba features a Cream White/Brown colorway with raw cotton uppers. Both styles have additional hand stitched details and elongated tongues that extend over the laces. Bonner keeps the 70s vibes going with a remake of the adidas Originals SL72 sneaker. Available in Trace Pink/Collegiate Orange/Maroon and Hemp/Maroon/Forest Green colorways, the Wales Bonner SL72 has corduroy uppers with velvet and leather overlays, sat atop a tricolor rubber soles. Launching alongside the collection is a visual campaign shot by long term collaborator Harley Weir as well as a film by Durimel.
