Reigning Champ x Muhammad Ali

Reigning Champ celebrates the transformational power of Muhammad Ali’s 1964 victory over Sonny Liston for the World Heavyweoght Championship. On February 25, 1964 Cassius Clay entered the ring a brash young challenger and defeated one of the most feared heavyweights of all time, Sonny Liston. The underdog’s speed bested the champion’s overwhelming power. After the fight the 22-year Heavyweight Champion announced he was changing his name to Cassius X and few days later he was renamed Muhammad Ali.

The Reigning Champ x Muhammad Ali capsule recognizes this moment of transformation and Ali’s journey from underdog to champion. Each piece in the capsule references the ’64 title fight, with some designs sourced from archival press images; the “Speed vs Power” graphics refer to the fight billing, the screen printed numbers are the date of the fight and Ali’s training at Miami Beach’s 5th Street Gym inspired the cut-off sweats.
