Can you build a fashion empire on a foundation of cozy sweaters? Obviously you can’t but then you’re not James Long. Since his 2007 debut at London Fashion Week’s MAN show (the precursor to London Collections: MEN) Long has evolved into one of British fashion’s rising stars and most important directional designers. His knitwear and leather pieces, not meant for the sartorially timid, have been a hit with buyers and press alike.
The James Long AW13 collection is “all things John Waters.” This inspiration was most obvious in Long’s signature knits. The embellished and appliquéd sweaters feature everything from pink flamingos to portraits iconic drag queen Divine. While the John Waters references are literal, any Nick at Nite fan may detect the influence of another unlikely style icon; Dr. Cliff Huxtable.
