Opening Soon: “Shiny Monsters” By Adam Wallacavage

The Philadelphia Art Alliance will host an exhibition of work by Adam Wallacavage from May 17 through August 19, 2012. The exhibiton, Shiny Monsters, will feature several new chandeliers by the self-described “militant ornamentalist.” The work featured was inspired by a combination of Wallacavage’s obsession with the ocean and a fascination with the extravagant interiors of now-closed Catholic churches in Philadelphia.

Teaching himself the art of ornamental plastering know as scagliola Wallacavage transformed the dining room of his 1870’s era South Philadelphia brownstone into a Victorian inspired fund house to use as backdrops for his photography. As his skills have progressed Wallacavage has continued to experiment with the color, technique and form of his large cast-plaster works, even developing his own unique glazes and application techniques to give his work a vibrant iridescence.

Recently inspired by his love of kitsch Wallacavage has added cast-plaster cartoon bunnies, vintage toys and Hello Kitty heads to his pieces. These new works are glazed in bright shades like bubble gum pink and mint green. The resulting sculptures reflect his varied aesthetic interests, ranging from 16th Century Baroque opulence to classic Americana.
