Ikat Print. What is it & why is it everywhere?

Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique similar to tie-dye. Although primarily associated with Indonesia, South and Central America and Central and South Asia the technique has been popular around the world for hundreds of years. Because of their intricacy of design and brilliance of color ikat patterns are often used in home decoration and sought after by textile collectors. The design, symbolism and use of the fabric vary by country, region and culture. While some designs were developed primarily for trade, more traditional patterns are used for ritual purposes and as symbols of status and wealth. Given the level of skill and amount of time required to produce some designs many cultures believe the cloth is imbued with mystical powers – and at $995 you may have to do a few tricks, if not magic, to get your hands on Burberry’s ikat print pants.
